Located on the northern borders of the metropolitan city of Rome, within the protected natural area of the Veio Regional Park, the Veio Archaeological Park represents the close link that historically characterised the relations between the great Etruscan city and Rome through its location alone.
It is one of the archeological sites that refers to the settlement of ancient Veio, the Etruscan Sanctuary of Apollo (or sanctuary of Portonaccio, named after the locality), located near the Mola di Isola Farnese. It represents the traditional access point to the paths that cross the southern part of the Regional Park for visitors and hikers and is nestled in a very evocative landscape, marked by the natural elements that could also be found there in ancient times.
One of the most monumental and venerated in Etruria, the sanctuary was located immediately outside the city and was visited for a long period, from the middle of the seventh century BCE until the full Roman age (2nd century BCE).
It has been investigated since 1916, when the famous terracotta statues of Apollo, Hermes and Heracles that decorating the roof of the archaic temple (late sixth century BCE) were found. The sanctuary is divided into two main nuclei: to the east there is the area with an altar dedicated to Minerva, while to the west there is a three-celled temple with very rich architectural decorations, today evoked by the reconstruction carried out in the early 1990s based on a design by the architect Ceschi.
