Mission

A museum is a non-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums promote diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.

The Direzione Musei statali (DMS) of the city of Rome is one of the branches of the Ministry of Culture (MiC) acting at the regional level.

Its tasks include the following activities: 

  • Coordination of the assigned state cultural sites, to ensure the implementation of the public service of the use and enhancement of museums, monuments and archaeological areas, guaranteeing uniform levels of quality
  • Promotion and expansion of museum collections, organisation of temporary exhibitions and cataloguing, study and restoration activities
  • Communication and enhancement of the cultural heritage of the city of Rome, in coordination with the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape and civic institutions
  • Collaboration with other cultural institutes in the region and third sector bodies for the creation of cultural and tourist routes and for educational and technological innovation
  • Encouraging the active participation of users and maximum accessibility to the museums that preserve the archaeological, artistic and historical heritage of the city of Rome

The Direzione Musei statali of the city of Rome oversees the following institutes and places of culture:

  • National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo and Passetto di Borgo
  • Pantheon
  • Galleria Spada
  • National Museum of Musical Instruments
  • Boncompagni Ludovisi Museum for Decorative Arts, Costume and Fashion of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries
  • Hendrik Christian Andersen Museum
  • Mario Praz Museum
  • Veio Archaeological Park
