Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi per le Arti decorative, il Costume e la Moda dei secoli XIX e XX

THE MUSEUM

A house museum from the early twentieth century belonging to the Boncompagni Ludovisi family. Donated to the Italian State in 1972, in 1995 it became a museum intended as a centre for the promotion and documentation of decorative arts, fashion and costume, understood as an evolution of social taste and the modern period. The common thread that unites these distinct cultural areas is the history of the taste for beauty and the quality of the products created.
Furniture, furnishings, clothes, fashion accessories, paintings and sculptures outline the quest for decorum and comfort in Italian society, especially in the twentieth century, thanks to the creative abilities of figures of excellence who have shaped the unique features of Italian manufacturing. By recording the evolution of the times, the collections of the Boncompagni Ludovisi Museum acknowledge the historical and artistic value of the objects and works that were originally intended for private use and are now available for public enjoyment.
Over the years, between 1996 and 2022, the collections were increased with numerous acquisitions. A prominent place belongs to the donation of Palma Bucarelli’s wardrobe, with clothes, jewellery and accessories of significant value that trace the history of modern art in Italy from the 1940s to the 1970s. Today the museum is dedicated to exhibiting the collections, furthering the link between fashion and contemporary art, meeting the interests of the wider public and hosting theatrical and musical events.
