Inaugurated in 1974, the National Museum of Musical Instruments is located a short distance from the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano and is adjacent to Piazza Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. Surroundedby a green area home to the archaeologicalremains of the Imperial Palace (Sessorioum), the Amphitheatrum Castrense and the Circus of Elagabalus, it remains immersed in an atmosphere of silence and peace. The Museum, the only one of its kind in the world, houses an extraordinary amount of musical instruments, ranging from ancient times to the Futurist period. Most of the instruments preserved here derive from the private collection Evan Gorga, an Italian tenor. An incredible series of rare and precious instruments was later added, making a total of more than 3000 pieces.
